After Britney Spears was photographed driving with her baby son on her lap, authorities in the US are investigating. Police said they would not press charges, but had sent officers to the singer’s Malibu home to gather information for the local Department of Children and Family Services (DCFS). Spears said she had been trying to protect four-month-old Sean Preston from paparazzi photographers.

After the photographs emerged Spears defended her actions, saying she had driven with the youngster on her lap because of a “horrifying, frightful encounter” with the paparazzi. A source explained to People magazine that she had driven her SUV to a Starbucks in Malibu with her bodyguard in the passenger seat and Sean in his car seat in the back. When the bodyguard went to get some drinks she took baby Sean from the back seat and the photographers approached the car and became “aggressive”. Spears then drove away while still holding Sean, once her bodyguard was back in the car.

Britney said, “I was terrified that this time the physically aggressive paparazzi would put both me and my baby in danger. I love my child and would do anything to protect him.”

Deputy Luis Castro said the sheriff’s department would not pursue any charges. “Unless a deputy saw the violation, there’s nothing we can do,” he said. “We don’t even know if this took place in our jurisdiction.”
Spears’ lawyer, Marty Singer, told the New York Daily News she would “fully cooperate” with authorities “and explain the circumstances”.
