Rapper 50 Cent, singer Annie Lennox and Green Day have been honoured by a group of their songwriting peers. The hip hop superstar took home top honors at the American Society of Composers, Authors and Publishers’ Pop Music Awards Monday night, where he was named Songwriter of the Year by a group of industry peers.
The awards, voted on by more than 700 songwriters, recording artists and industry leaders, were doled out at the Beverly Hilton Hotel and in addition to Eminem’s protégé, also gave kudos to Green Day, Annie Lennox and Kelly Clarkson.
Green Day’s Boulevard Of Broken Dreams and Mariah Carey’s We Belong Together – written by Johnta Austin, Jermaine Dupri and Manuel Seal – were joint winners of the Song Of The Year Award, while the punk trio also won the Creative Voice Award.

A second-time songwriter of the year winner, 50 Cent accepted the award via a video message, thanking his peers for inspiring him “to write even more exciting material.”
“I want to tell you that I use you for energy,” 50 Cent said while accepting his award via a video message. “I listen to the material that you create…it helps me move to the next level…it inspires me to write even more exciting material.”

Lennox collected the Founders Award for her “inspirational” work as a solo artist and with The Eurythmics, one of the biggest groups of the 1980s. Lennox joins Sir Paul McCartney, Neil Young and Tom Waits as a recipient of the Founders Award. Which is awarded to songwriters who have made exceptional contributions to music and who have influenced their peers.

Other winners on Monday night included EMI Music Publishing, which was named publisher of the year, and singer-songwriter Joseph Arthur, who followed in the footsteps of acts such as The Arcade Fire, Beck and The Strokes in winning ASCAP’s College Vanguard Award – an honour recognizing new artists who first gain recognition on college radio.
