Eminem Return To Big Screen In Western
Eminem has agreed to appear in a new film as a bounty hunter, according to reports. The rap star, who starred in the semi-autobiographical 8 Mile in 2003 to much acclaim, is understood to have agreed to appear in a movie adaptation of an old TV series Western “Have Gun — Will Travel.”
Paramount Pictures has extended an 18-month option on the property to develop it as a vehicle for the Detroit rapper, Daily Variety reported Tuesday. The show debuted on CBS in 1957 and ran until 1963.
The setting could be Eminem’s hometown of Detroit, but those details have yet to be worked out, Variety reports, adding that Paramount has an 18-month option to develop Have Gun as an action drama for Eminem.
The new movie will be “revamped from the original, with some characters based loosely on ones from the series as well as nods to certain story points,” Paul Rosenberg, Eminem’s manager told Variety.
With an unconventional hero named Paladin, “Have Gun Will Travel” was one of the signature hits of TV’s golden age of Westerns in the 1950s and early ‘60s, according to the “The Complete Directory To Prime Time Network and Cable TV Shows.” The series, which ran on CBS from 1957-63, starred Richard Boone as the distinctively black-clad Paladin, an educated gunslinger with a degree from West Point who operated as a highly paid gun for hire. His unusual calling card carried the figure of a paladin — the white chess knight — along with the inscription “Have Gun, Will Travel …Wire Paladin, San Francisco.”
The big-screen version will reportedly incorporate some elements from the show but will be revamped as a present-day action-adventure.
In a nod to Eminem’s rabid fan base Variety reports that filmmakers might tweak the story to take place in the rapper’s hometown of Detroit. An Oscar winner for Best Song for 8 Mile’s “Lose Yourself,” Eminem is also expected to contribute several original songs to the Have Gun Will Travel soundtrack.
In the film, the concept will be updated for contemporary times. Daily Varity said it’s possible the setting would be Detroit, but that details have yet to be finalized. It will not be a musical movie, but Eminem (Marshall Mathers) will likely be involved in the soundtrack or score.
