Jazz Musician Mixed With Funk, Hard Bop Into Shows
Tenor saxophonist Javon Jackson’s main interest is fusing funk with jazz and with his regular band— plus legendary pianist-vocalist Les McCann— performed last week at Jazz Alley in Washington, D.C., reflected that interest. In fact, Jackson said listeners will hear very little funk when he and his Super Band are in concert Thursday, Oct. 12, at the Outpost Performance Space.
That band includes pianist George Cables, drummer Jimmy Cobb and bassist Nat Reeves.
“We’ll be playing more bop and hard bop material because most of the venues with them are concert venues,” Jackson said in a phone interview from Washington, D.C.
Jackson is a product of the world of bop, having been a member of Art Blakey’s Jazz Messengers ensemble. Since his years with Blakey, Jackson has worked with other jazz legends, including Elvin Jones, Cedar Walton, Charlie Haden and Christian McBride.
Jackson has also recorded several straight-ahead jazz CDs. “As time goes on and the fact that you’re a musician you have your curiosities. I’m interested in a whole lot that’s going on. I listen for what the music does for me emotionally,” Jackson said.
“If I put on a (J.S.) Bach record, I do it just to enjoy it … A (John) Coltrane record, based on my history and my being a fan, I listen more intently to the harmonic aspects of it.”
