Daryl Hannah, the film star who played a mermaid in the iconic 1984 movie Splash, has been arrested in a tree as she tried to save a green space in Los Angeles from developers. She has reaffirmed her commitment to the protest against the closure of a Los Angeles community garden, despite being arrested Tuesday.
Minutes before her arrest, Hannah - who had spent three weeks in a tree on the site - said: “I’m planning on holding my position. I’m very confident this is the morally right thing to do.”
The 14-acre Central Urban Garden - which is managed by immigrant farmers who grow fruit and vegetables there - is due to be bulldozed by developers.

Police staged a dawn raid in an effort to catch protestors like Hannah and singer Joan Baez unaware, and firefighters then used a cherry-picking crane to bring Hannah, farmers and activists down from their perch in a walnut tree. Read more!

Folk singer Joan Baez has taken up residence in a tree with activist Julia “Butterfly” Hill in order to raise awareness about 14 acres of farmland under threat from the land’s owner. Baez, who gave voice to Vietnam War protesters, and Julia “Butterfly” Hill, whose late 1990s anti-logging protest drew widespread attention, said they would occupy the tree in shifts.

She is hoping that the Hollywood actress Daryl Hannah, who has joined the campaigners along with musician Ben Harper, will also try to climb the tree. The only thing preventing her is her fear of heights. “It was wonderful to be up there and away from everybody, looking at the stars through the leaves,” Baez continued. “The freight trains [that pass nearby] are so loud but I did not hear them … For me it was a wonderful experience.” Read more!
